Why are so many posts being locked?

It's starting to get annoying see a dish I like on the front page and try to comment only to find that it has been locked.

I understand there are "uncivil comments", but how bad can they really be? There are uncivil comments plastered all over the Internet.

We don't need a safe space on /r/food of all places. The jerks will get downvoted and less seen than the valuable comments. That's HOW reddit works.

Edit: I should clarify it's mainly posts that make it to the front page.
